ML Muster: Welcome Back | ConVERSOs | BTW | X Time

By Chad Walsh / August 23, 2024 / Middle Loop Muster

Dear Middle Loop Learners & Families,

Welcome back (again)! We hope you had a restful and inspiring break, and that you’re as excited as we are for the journey ahead this year. The start of the academic year has been incredibly positive, with learners showing remarkable adaptability, enthusiasm, and a strong sense of community.

We are particularly impressed with how smoothly our learners have transitioned into their new routines and relationships. Their eagerness to connect, collaborate, and dive into meaningful learning experiences sets a promising tone for what lies ahead.

At VERSO, we are driven to create a learning environment where curiosity thrives, creativity flourishes, and each learner is empowered to contribute in impactful ways.

As we embark on this new school year, we look forward to exploring innovative ideas, building on the momentum of our learner-centered approach, and watching our learners grow as confident, thoughtful contributors. There’s a world of exciting opportunities waiting for us, and together, we’ll continue to push the boundaries of what learning can be.

Here’s a fun photo of a math challenge presented to the learners on how they could use money and the art of negotiation to purchase different materials to create the tallest tower.

X Time | C5-6 Together

This year, we are thrilled to introduce an exciting new initiative called X Time. X Time is dedicated to fostering a stronger sense of community, building team spirit, and creating meaningful workshops that focus on key aspects of well-being. It is a dedicated time where learners and staff come together to connect, engage in purposeful activities, and explore strategies for holistic growth—both individually and as a community. We believe X Time will be a powerful way to enhance our shared experience at VERSO and support everyone’s journey toward personal and collective well-being.

At VERSO, we are centering our well-being approach around the Well-being Wheel, a framework that highlights the key areas essential to holistic adolescent development. Over the course of the year, we will run a series of 4-week programs focused on each aspect of the wheel, guiding learners through targeted workshops that develop specific skills and competencies. Each experience is designed to nurture their emotional, social, physical, and mental well-being, ensuring they have the tools to navigate challenges and thrive in both school and life.

We have 8 Learning Designers and the school nurse heading off with C5-6 to a camp at Pattana Sports Resort in Chonburi.

This two-day, one-night trip will involve challenge activities, team-building, and introductions to our C5-6 Learning Projects this year, in particular our first Learning Lab project.

C7-6 BTW Details

We are excited to announce an educational trip  for C7-8 to iCamp Kanchanaburi that is a key part of our Quarter 1 Learning Lab:

"Exploring History Through Performing Arts" project

This trip will allow learners to deepen their understanding of history and culture by visiting significant historical sites and engaging with local experts. By immersing themselves in different cultural contexts, learners will enhance their research and better understand the historical influences that shape cultural identities, directly connecting to their classroom studies.

In addition to historical exploration, this trip will provide valuable opportunities for learners to develop their collaborative and performance skills. Working together in new environments and refining their performance pieces in settings that resonate with their studies will prepare them for their final presentations. These experiences will also foster personal growth, building confidence and independence as learners engage with the world around them.

Prior to the trip, Learning Designers will send out more detailed information including a contact phone number for the camp and a packing list. There will also be a chance to ask any last minute questions at the conVERSOs on Tuesday 3 September.

ConVERSO | Parent-Learning Designer

We would like to invite and welcome parents (without learners) for a ConVERSO on Tuesday, 3 September. We are offering a face-to-face ConVERSO or a Google Meet Video Call ConVERSO.

Once you have selected the appointment(s) that suit you from the link, we will then reach out to confirm your 20-minute with your child's community time LD or 10-minute ConVERSO with a specialist according to the below five groupings. For parents who choose to join us in a face-to-face ConVERSO, use the room number below and show up 5 minutes before your ConVERSO. For parents who opt for a video call, you can click on the Google Meet in the Google Calendar invite to access the video.

During this ConVERSOLearning Designers will drive the ConVERSO to share what learners have been learning. It is also an opportunity for parents to share their expectations, goals, concerns, and any other information that will help Learning Designers bring out the best in them at school. It's a great way for LDs to listen and learn more about who your child is and how best we can support them.

There is NO SCHOOL and NO ECA for learners on this day. If you decide to bring your child with you, we ask that you take full responsibility for their supervision while at school.

Please find your child's name in the below ConVERSO groups and only sign up a time slot with that assigned Learning Designer.

Please contact the Learning Designer directly if you have any specific questions.

All email contacts are outlined below. If you are unable to secure a time slot with a single-subject LD, let us know on the google form and we will follow up with you.

Please look out for a link on Monday, 26 August at 4pm. For families that have siblings, please remember to allow travel time between loops. Please avoid booking back-to-back ConVERSOs and leave some time between ConVERSOs to allow for transition.

When you are making your ConVERSO appointment please match up the LD ConVERSO group with the same color as your child's grouping. Example: Jonathan Campbell's ConVERSO group is orange; therefore, if your child is in his orange group please select Jonathan. If your child is in the blue COnVERSO group with Dan Hyman, please select Dan as the LD for your ConVERSO appointment.

Single-subject LDs will be in VERSO Connect in the HUB for all ConVERSO appointments. Remember these are optional. Once these appointments have been booked out, and you still want to meet with a single-subject LD, you can choose on the google form you wish to meet with them and we will find another time to make time for you to connect with them. There are limited appointments because some of our single-subject LDs are shared across loops and have more learners.

Design Thinking | Process and Mindsets

Screenshot 2567-08-19 at 09.23.21

At VERSO, we embrace a design thinking mindset and process as the foundation for developing essential skills such as problem-solving, creativity, communication, and collaboration. Design thinking is a human-centered approach that encourages learners to deeply understand the needs of others, brainstorm innovative solutions, and iterate through prototyping and testing. This model is at the heart of our Explore projects, where learners engage in real-world challenges, working through stages of empathy, ideation, prototyping, and reflection.

A recent enhancement has been the change from the 4th mindset Review and Evolve to Present and  Contribute. We felt this change reinforces communication and presentation skills which strengthens confidence to share and connect. While at first, it makes sense this is a linear process, it also promotes a back-and-forth process depending on the needs of the challenge and the user.

By explicitly teaching this process, we empower learners to take ownership of their learning, think critically, work effectively in teams, and approach complex problems with a mindset focused on experimentation and growth. This approach not only enhances their academic experience but also equips them with the skills and mindsets needed to contribute meaningfully in an ever-changing world.
