Dear Lower Loop Families,

Thank you for your ongoing support—it truly means so much to us! It was wonderful to see so many of you at David Mannell’s Coffee Morning on Wednesday. Your engagement helps build the strong community that makes VERSO special.

We also greatly appreciate your understanding with the scheduled Learner Holiday today, which allowed our faculty to work closely with David. This dedicated time enabled us to dive deep into the role of emotions in cognition, further enhancing our ability to support our learners' development.

Looking ahead, please note that our next scheduled Early Dismissal is coming up on Monday, 27 November. I’ve outlined the details for this a bit later in the newsletter, so please take a moment to review them.

This week, David Mannell has been collaborating with the VERSO community to deepen understanding and practices around Mind, Brain, and Education (MBE) science. His visit included engaging sessions with both parents and faculty, each designed to enhance awareness and application of MBE principles for learner success.

Parent Coffee Morning – Wednesday 20 November

David began the week by hosting a coffee morning for parents, creating an open space to share insights on how neuroscience and emotional resilience impact student learning. This session encouraged parents to reflect on how they can support their children’s executive function and emotional well-being at home, aligning efforts with those in the classroom.

Please click here to see presentations of coffee mornings you may have missed. Videos may take some time to upload and our tech team will strive to have them up as soon as possible.

Faculty Professional Learning – Thursday 21- Friday 22 Nov

On Thursday and Friday, David worked with Learning Designers and Learning Assistants in a series of interactive sessions focused on deepening their understanding of key MBE concepts.

  • Executive Function and Resilience:
Faculty explored the vital role of executive functions—like working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control—in learning. David shared strategies to foster resilience, ensuring learners can persevere through challenges while developing strong cognitive and emotional skills.

  • Belonging Mindset: The Role of Emotion in Cognition:
In the final session, David emphasized the powerful connection between a sense of belonging and cognitive performance. He delved into how emotions influence learning, equipping faculty with approaches to create emotionally supportive environments that maximize engagement and academic growth.

David's sessions were a valuable opportunity for the VERSO community to unite around shared goals of fostering resilient, confident, and emotionally healthy learners. His expertise continues to inspire both educators and families to prioritize practices that nurture the mind and heart of each learner.

Thank you, as always, for being such an integral part of our learning community.

In my next update, I look forward to sharing with you a recount of two upcoming Beyond the Walls trips.

  • C1-2 will visit Wow Park, where they will experience firsthand the power of light and sound—directly linking to their current Learning Lab on the movement and behavior of light and sound.
  • C3-4 will spend the day at Roots at The Commons, supporting their Learning Lab as they investigate the evolution of successful businesses and how they have adapted over time.

These exciting trips will provide valuable real-world connections to the learning path they are on this quarter.  Stay tuned for more!
