Inspiring Mathematical Artists

DRIVING QUESTION: How might artists inspire us to represent math through art?

Using the design thinking process, our C5-6 learners uncovered and interpreted their background knowledge of the connections between art and mathematics. They examined works by various artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Alexander Calder, designed several prototypes, and finally created an original work of art inspired by one of their favorite mathematical artists. They were introduced to the RAFT (Role, Audience, Format, Topic) writing strategy, demonstrating their understanding of their chosen artist and the math represented within their art.

Their mathematical artwork was displayed during Showtime at VERSO's first student art gallery, with a special appearance by well-known Bangkok street artist #AlexFace, owner of the iconic Mardi, a three-eyed baby bunny. The prints were made available for purchase and money raised went towards purchasing art supplied for a local charity.
